AutoPatcher for XP

Filed under: CJknowsHow — cpyrexia @ 10:13 pm

Sp3
W
e need Windows XP Service Pack
3.0 badly now. When you install a new XP system, after installing
Service Pack 2.0, you will find over 60 more updates to install now. We
predicted Service Pack 3.0 would be out sometime in 2006!!! But 2006 is
almost over. Most of the ‘XP Service Pack 3.0 predictions’ were based
on statements from Microsoft executives and the Windows Service Pack
roadmap available on the Microsoft Site.

Microsoft
initially hinted that XP Service Pack 3.0 could be released before
Longhorn but very soon, Windows Vista became the top priority and
Service Pack 3.0 development was pushed further back.

Service Pack 3.0 was planned as a regular bug fix release with no new features though there were rumors that Internet Explorer 7.0 and Windows Media Player 11.0
could be bundled with XP SP3. Unfortunately, nothing of this sort
happened and Microsoft finally pushed XP Service Pack 3.0 to first half
of 2008.

Now the next big question – “How
to keep track of various security patches, updates and hotfixes that
have been released by Microsoft since Windows XP Service Pack 2.0
” debuted in August 2004??

While
you can install Windows XP Service Pack 2.0 from the CD, connect the
computer to the internet and turn on Windows Update so that all patches
are automatically downloaded and installed, this is certainly not the
best approach - imagine when your net connection breaks or you have to
build 10 computers or you don’t have internet at all??

Well,
here’s an easy installer package that will install every single
Microsoft update on your XP Service Pack 2.0 computer. The program is
called Autopatcher for XPAutpatcher also features a slick looking GUI and can be customized to install as much or as little as you please.

The
most remarkable part of Autopatcher is that you don’t have to restart
your Windows machine after every update. With AutoPatcher, you can
install critical patches offline, eliminating the risk of getting
infected while using Windows Update.

Has there ever been a period of time without war?

Filed under: CJknowsHow — cpyrexia @ 8:55 pm

War
This timeline of
military history, taken primarily from George C Kohn’s "Dictionary of
Wars," indicates that from roughly 2925 B.C. to, oh, now, an unbroken
period of hostility between one group of people and another has existed.

A
Short History of War, published by the U.S. Army War College, actually
dates the advent of societal warfare back to 4000 B.C. Prior to that,
"…warfare itself had not in any meaningful sense been invented. There
were only the embryonic beginnings of a warrior class still loosely
embedded in a tribal social structure that lacked both the physical and
psychological requirements to produce war on any scale."

So do
the 5000s B.C. and before represent a pax pre-historica? Maybe, maybe
not. According to Wikipedia, "The beginning of prehistoric wars is a
disputed issue between anthropologists and historians." The controversy
includes purported archaeological evidence of a battle on the Nile that
some sources date as far back as 12,000 B.C. 59 bodies were found at
that site; compare that to the well over 100 million deaths attributed
to war in the 20th century, and the pre-historic era
does start to sound like the good old days. Perhaps this century will be the one to reverse the trend.

Swinging out with the The Swing Out Sisters.

Filed under: Music — cpyrexia @ 7:13 pm

“Old but still new” would be a paradox that would be used by those who
were fortunate to again watch their favorite jazz-pop duo, the Swing
Out Sisters. Though their songs have been popular in the 1980’s, it
definitely made its mark not only because of the lyrics but also
because of their unique kind of tunes, a fusion of jazz and
sophisticated pop melody. Because of this, their music was carried on
up to this generation. Their audiences from the past continuously
listen to their compositions and have influenced others to listen to
the same kind of music. Anyway, Just wanted to post some of the pictures of that concert here in the Philippines (April 8).

Set on fire: FHM Philippines model Scarlet Bouffard.

Filed under: Current Affairs — cpyrexia @ 1:00 pm
Scarletbouffard MANILA, Philippines - Model Scarlet Garcia, who with three companions was shot and killed inside her townhouse in Olongapo City before dawn Thursday, may have been sexually molested as well.

Investigator-on-case Insp. Santos Candido said late Thursday that Garcia and cousin Rachel Estacio had no underwear when their bodies were found.

"Pareho silang wala nang underwear o [panties]. Ito na-autopsy sa funeraria, siguro doon natin malalaman. Nakadamit pantaas sila (They were both clothed but were not wearing panties. We expect the autopsy to give us a clearer picture of what happened)," Candido said in an interview on dzRH radio.

He said investigators also found the two in a "huddling" position at the corner of the bathroom, indicating they could have begged their killers for mercy.

The two other fatalities, George Castor and Van Mark Bandejas (a.k.a.
Joaqui/Wakee), were found bound and in another part of the townhouse.

Each sustained at least one gunshot wound to the head, Candido said, adding the killers put a piece of cloth near Bandejas’ head and tried to set fire to it.

Shells recovered from the crime scene indicated "two or more" assailants used cal-.45 and 9-mm pistols to kill the four, he said.

Candido said their initial investigation showed the killers could have been with the victims while they were having a videoke session shortly before the murders.

Police are eyeing robbery and a love triangle as likely motives behind the grisly crime.

"Maaari pong ganoon, maaaring kakilala nila (That is possible, the victims may have known their killers)," he said when asked if the suspects may have been acquaintances of the victims.

Who invented Sudoku?

Filed under: CJknowsHow — cpyrexia @ 12:49 pm

SodokuSudoku is a numbers-based game. The rules are simple — players attempt to fill in a nine-by-nine grid before going completely insane. Not surprisingly, these brainteasers owe their existence to a mathematician.

Leonhard Euler is widely acknolwedged as the father of Sudoku. In 1793, Euler invented "Latin Squares," the precursor to today’s modern Sudoku puzzles. As far as mathematicians go, Euler was pretty famous in his day. According to about.com, the "Swiss genius dominated 18th-century mathematics."

The name Sudoku didn’t come until much later (1984, to be exact). According to the London Observer, a Japanese publisher made a few logistical improvements to the game and then dubbed it "Sudoku." In Japanese, "Su means a number and doku roughly translates as singular or unique," says the Observer.

These days, you can find Sudoku games all over the Web. If you’re really up for a challenge, take a look at this article from USA Today. It details the "world’s hardest Sudoku puzzle." Clearly, wimps need not apply.
